What Is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is the use of a small amount of motion in a specific direction that helps restore spinal function. A chiropractic adjustment is pain free, drug free and non evasive. The adjustment is applied to a joint that is fixated, stuck, "locked up", or not
moving properly. The adjustment helps return the bones to a more normal position or motion, which will reduce your swelling and decrease pressure on your nerves. This restores balance in the soft tissues of your joint, improves motion and optimizes nerve function.
When the joints of your spine become misaligned from repetitive micro-trauma, stress or occupational reasons, the end result is a subluxation (misalignment). This causes irritation to nerve roots, which will cause pain and discomfort. These irritated nerves also cause swelling in your soft tissues, restricting your movement and sending you on a downward spiral of impaired motion and join degeneration. A chiropractic adjustment doesn’t actually move or shift your bones. What we really do is to facilitate motion in the direction of the needed correction.
Common causes of Subluxation
1. Vertebrae can misalign due to trauma such as a slip and fall.
2. Bad posture can lead to global areas of spinal misalignment.
3. Arthritic or degenerative spinal changes may lead to subluxation.
4. Muscle spasm or tight muscles can contribute to misalignment by pulling on vertebrae.
